"This book adopts a new perspective on the transformation of social inequality by analyzing how it is experienced by individuals. Based on qualitative research among industrial workers and local experts in a region that has undergone deindustrialisation and transformation to a service-based economy, the author examines the loss of status among former manual labourers. Focus lies on their emotional experiences, nostalgic memories and attachments to their former places of work, to transformed neighborhoods, as well as to public space. "The migration of professionals is widely seen as a paradigmatic representation and a driver of globalization. The global elite of highly qualified migrants--managers and scientists, for example--are partly defined by their lives' mobility. But their everyday lives are based and take place in specific cities. The contributors of this book analyze the relevance of locality for a mobile group and provide a new perspective on migrant professionals by considering the relevance of social identities for local encounters in socially unequal cities. Contributors explore shifting identities, senses of belonging, and spatial and social inequalities and encounters between migrant professionals and 'Others' within the cities. Sie gelten als Agenten und Treiber der Globalisierung: die in den Finanzmetropolen tätigen Manager. In diesem reich bebilderten Buch werden erstmals hochmobile Expatriates in ihrem alltäglichen Handeln direkt an städtischen Orten betrachtet. Wo und warum halten sich die Finanzmanager in den Städten auf? Wie betrachten sie bestimmte urbane Orte und erleben diese? Interviews und Beobachtungen zeigen die alltäglichen Handlungen der männlichen deutschen Finanzmanager in London und Singapur und lassen so die meist unsichtbar bleibenden Identitäten der weißen und globalen Elite sichtbar werden. Die vergleichende Analyse des Alltags in beiden Städten macht die Bedeutung des besonderen Ortes für das Handeln deutlich. Die ehemals koloniale Beziehung zwischen dem Zentrum London und der Peripherie Singapur ist noch heute für das Handeln der Finanzmanager bedeutsam. ZusammenfassungProblematisiert wird, dass der Aufsatz von Revers und Traunmüller Erkenntnisinteresse und Positionalität der durchgeführten Forschung verschleiert. Eine Offenlegung wäre notwendig, um die Grundlagen der schwerwiegenden methodischen Probleme, der Fallauswahl und der unbelegten Behauptungen des Aufsatzes verstehen zu können. Im Widerspruch zu der falschen Annahme, dass Meinungsfreiheit grenzenlos sei und auch mit einer Freiheit einhergehe, andere zu diskriminieren, legt meine Replik die Notwendigkeit (siehe Grundgesetz und Gleichbehandlungsgesetz) dar, dass auch an den Universitäten Diskriminierungen aktiv vermieden werden müssen.

This essay analyses biographic memories of practices of resistance of workers in the industrial transformation region in the south of Nuremberg. These memories are marked by a nostalgic view of public space in former times, which is put in contrast with public space as it is today. While former practices of resistance are remembered with nostalgia, present-day resistance practices are described as threatening practices performed by others. It turns out that nostalgia for resistance in the public space in the past is also a social positioning in the present.

"With migration, home is redefined (...), and a sense of belonging is related not to one place but to multiple sites (...). Indeed, Avtar Brah (...) writes that 'on the one hand, 'home' is a mythic place of desire in the diasporic imagination. In this sense, it is a place of no return, even if it is possible to visit the geographical territory that is seen as the place of 'origin'. On the other hand, home is also the lived experience of locality'. Brah's concept of a 'homing desire' points out that there is no possibility of returning to such an idealised home and indicates that not all migrants maintain an ideology of a return to a place of 'origin'. On the basis of an in-depth analysis of this case study (...) in this chapter I explore this alternative, suggesting that migrants may sometimes avoid a nostalgic view of home and instead demonstrate a resilient and practical transnational strategy of home. Although it is often understood that ageing prompts people to became more immobile (...) and more focused on locality, this chapter demonstrates the opposite tendency, namely that, in older age and especially with retirement, people can also become more mobile than they were previously. This chapter thereby contributes to research on ageing examining the changing nature of community attachments in later life against the backdrop of globalisation processes (...), in resonance with work on transnational mobilities in retirement migration (...)." "In this chapter, I analyze the process of the search for and selection of a residence with respect to the highly mobile German financial managers in London and Singapore. It shall be shown that the integration into social networks, that is, the social capital, and the identity-related direct local experiences are particularly important for the selection of a residence and its location.; My research is based on 40 interviews conducted in a research project, which was concluded in 2008. Based on the principles of the grounded theory and the subsequent development of a theory out of the data (...), German financial managers from various financial companies in various management positions were surveyed in semistructured interviews in London and Singapore. For this chapter, the interviews of the male interviewees were analyzed. With this comparative analysis of the practice of searching for a residence as exhibited by male German financial managers in London and Singapore, this chapter follows the argument that the previously neglected comparative approach brings out the specifics of the individual urban localities (...), which can then be used for migration studies (...)."
